HTTPS
The protocol HTTPS is short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure.
HTTPS is an extension to the HTTP protocol, for a safe data exchange. In case HTTPS is used, all data are encrypted, avoiding any outsider, for example someone who eavesdrops on you, to find out which data are sent. A HTTPS-connection consists of a common HTTP-connection, plus a SSL-connection. The SSL-connection encrypts the HTTP-traffic, making it impossible to read out the traffic, if intercepted, without cracking the encryption-algorithm, in contrast with normal HTTP-traffic, which is sent unencrypted, allowing others to read it out without cracking anything.
